The Balgal Beach and Rollingstone areas are relatively undiscovered by backpackers. When you are "on the bus" being shunted between Sydney and Cairns and destinations in between like Byron Bay and Airlie Beach, you go right past us. We are 45 minutes north of Townsville and 3 hours south of Cairns.

So what is there to do for backpackers?
< p>Getting AroundWell, first you'll need a car. If you are dropped off at either Townsville or Cairns, contact the fabulous people at Meteor Car & Truck Rental. They are very helpful and have a great range of cars at very competitive prices. They'll get the car to you rather than you having to find them.
Fruit Picking
October and November is our fruit picking season. We have plenty of mangoes and pineapples that need to be picked, packed and sent to Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne markets. You'll have to contact the pub for a report on available work.
Night Life
You don't come to Balgal for the usual backpacker's raging dance parties that stop on sunrise! You stay around this way to chill-out before moving north to Cairns or south to Townsville and Airlie Beach. The Rollingstone Pub is a great place for a beer and a chat with the locals. At the mouth of Rollingstone Creek you will find Fishermans Landing where you will see great sunsets served with ice cold beer, hamburgers and fish and chips
During the Day
Lie on the beach and relax; Take a long walk along Balgal Beach; Play golf at the nearby Mystic Sands Golf & Country Club (great pool, tennis, lawn bowls and really good bar facilities); Buy some cheap fishing gear at The Landing and try and catch a Barramundi in the creek; Take a short drive to Crystal Creek freshwater swimming holes; Visit some of Queenslands highest waterfalls; Scam a ride on a local's boat and go out to the Palm Islands for fishing and snorkelling. And of course, get yourself to the Club BBQs which are held at 5pm on the first Sunday of the month!
